eSIM Glossary: Key Terms Simplified

The mobile technology sector uses many specialized terms and acronyms. For those new to eSIM, it can be challenging to keep up. This glossary explains essential eSIM concepts clearly and concisely.

Core Concepts

eSIM (Embedded SIM): A digital SIM embedded in your device, allowing you to activate a cellular plan without a physical SIM.

eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card): The hardware that enables eSIM functionality, supporting secure remote management of cellular profiles.

eSIM Profile: A digital file that contains network settings and enables cellular connectivity on compatible devices.

Connectivity & Network

APN (Access Point Name): Settings that allow your device to connect to the mobile internet. Most eSIMs auto-configure APN, but manual settings may sometimes be needed.

Roaming: Using cellular services outside your home network coverage. Enable roaming to use eSIMs while abroad.Don't forget to "turn on roaming"

Breakout IP: The public IP address used when your device accesses the internet. Some apps or services may perform better with specific IP types.

LTE (Long Term Evolution): A standard for high-speed 4G wireless communication.

MSISDN: Your full mobile number, including country and area codes. Most eSIM data plans do not include voice or SMS. Our eSIMs are data only.

 

Data Plans

Daypass / Unlimited Plans: Offer a specific amount of high-speed data per day, often with unlimited slower data after the cap.

Fixed Data Plans/ Data in total: Provide a set amount of data to use within a validity period (e.g., 1GB/7 days).

Fair Usage Policy (FUP): A policy to ensure network stability; speeds may be reduced after certain usage thresholds.

 

Identification & Security

ICCID: A unique identifier for the eSIM hardware.

IMSI: A number identifying the subscriber on the network, used for services like data top-ups and usage tracking.

PIN :Four digit access code for a SIM

 

PUK (Personal Unlocking Key)

Used to unlock a mobile phone. May be needed if

1. your device is locked to a particular carrier
2. you enter the PIN incorrectly three times
